Elected officials serving Knox County
One of Tennessee’s founding counties
Knox County was created in 1792 by Governor William Blount, one of only eight counties formed during territorial administration. Named for Revolutionary War general Henry Knox, it sits at the geographic center of East Tennessee’s Great Valley, where the Holston and French Broad Rivers join to form the Tennessee River.
Knox County operates under home rule, led by an elected County Mayor and County Commission. The county runs local schools, the health department, and library branches, while Knoxville maintains its own city government and police department.
